Hardware Warranties
Policy regarding the purchase of warranties for IT hardware.
We are all required to be good stewards of University property and funds, including general and extramural fund sources. Part of good stewardship is ensuring that our investments are protected.
A minimum 3-year warranty that protects against manufacturing defects and failures is required on all IT hardware costing more than $750, including computers, tablets, printers, servers, etc.
Specifically for laptops and other portable IT hardware, we highly recommend but do not require the addition of accidental damage protection to the standard warranty package, which covers damage from spills, drops, and other sources of unintentional damage.
For assets defined as equipment by the University (assets costing $5000 or more), we highly recommend the purchase of service contracts to provide periodic maintenance and upgrades in addition to standard warranties.
